kids create!
a workshop where creativity and free expression are encouraged for ages 7 and up!

A desire to break away from the bombardment of junk food advertising aimed at children has inspired Monique, a Canberra mother, now based in Mullumbimby, to develop her own kids create! workshops to educate kids in healthy eating.

Using the ‘Eat a Rainbow Every Day’ concept, children use their imagination and creativity to create wholesome dishes from organic wholefoods, while at the same time learning the nutritional benefits of different food groups.

According to Monique, the children are having so much fun they don’t even realise how much they are learning about the importance of a balanced diet.

“The children knead pizza dough, make ‘rainbow pizzas’ using different coloured ingredients, make their own herb-infused pasta, and sort fruit and vegetables into colour groups before eating. They’re learning how each coloured fruit and vegetable has its own nutritional value, and often they’re so engrossed they don’t realise how many new things they’re trying,” says Monique.

Monique is the mother of six-year-old daughter and is passionate about the joy of eating fresh, healthy wholefoods.

Monique launched Burn To Shine Natural Candle Co, and produces her own handmade beeswax candles free from synthetic fragrances and petroleum-based materials, and adds this experience to the workshops.

Beeswax candles handrolled by the children“Rolling beeswax candles is simple for children and they get a real sense of achievement to take home something they have made which the whole family can enjoy.” says Monique.

Each child leaves the kids create! 3-hourworkshop with a cookbook of their lunchtime creations and some leftovers to share with their family in addition to decorated beeswax tapers and an array of sustainable palm wax tealights that they have made.

Laurie McDonald of Canberra Furnished Accommodation, sent her son Connor along to the workshop and was impressed by how animated and empowered her son felt afterwards.

“In the car on the way home, Connor proudly announced that he has eaten zucchini and liked it, then later he tried mushrooms at childcare for the first time. Connor is not a fussy eater, but he is very set in his ways when it comes to food and this is quite a milestone. He is totally into the rainbow concept of healthy eating now,” says Laurie.

The workshops are $60 per child and special dietary requirements can be catered for on request. The produce used during the class is predominantly local, seasonal and organic.

Kids must bring an apron and an appetite for rainbows!

Expressions of interest are open for September 2010 and January 2011 school holidays to be held in Canberra. Workshop numbers are limited.
