Eat A Rainbow!
a workshop where creativity and free expression are encouraged for ages 7 and up!

A desire to break away from the bombardment of junk food advertising aimed at children has inspired Monique, a Canberra mother, to develop her own workshops to educate children in healthy eating.

Using the ‘Eat a Rainbow Every Day’ concept, children use their imagination and creativity to create wholesome dishes from organic wholefoods, while at the same time learning the nutritional benefits of different food groups.

According to Monique, the children are having so much fun they don’t even realise how much they are learning about the importance of a balanced diet.

“The children knead gluten free pizza dough, make ‘rainbow pizzas’ using different coloured ingredients, make their own herb-infused pasta entirely from scratch with a pasta machine, and sort organic fruit and vegetables into colour groups before eating. They’re learning how each coloured fruit and vegetable has its own nutritional value, and often they’re so engrossed they don’t realise how many new things they’re trying,” says Monique.

Monique is the mother of seven-year-old daughter and is passionate about the joy of eating fresh, organic wholefoods.

Monique launched Burn To Shine Natural Candle Co in 2007 and produces her own hand poured beeswax candles free from synthetic fragrances and petroleum-based materials, and adds this experience to the workshops.

Beeswax candles handrolled by the children“Rolling beeswax candles is simple for children and they get a real sense of achievement to take home something they have made which the whole family can enjoy.” says Monique.

Each child leaves the kids create! 3-hourworkshop with a cookbook of their lunchtime creations and some leftovers to share with their family in addition to decorated beeswax tapers and tealights that they have made.

Canberra Business Woman of the Year, Laurie McDonald of Canberra Furnished Accommodation, sent her son Connor along to the workshop and was impressed by how animated and empowered her son felt afterwards.

“In the car on the way home, Connor proudly announced that he has eaten zucchini and liked it, then later he tried mushrooms at childcare for the first time. Connor is not a fussy eater, but he is very set in his ways when it comes to food and this is quite a milestone. He is totally into the rainbow concept of healthy eating now,” says Laurie.

The workshops are $60 per child for  3 hours and special dietary requirements can be catered for upon request. The fresh produce used during the class is local, seasonal and organic.

Kids must bring an apron and an appetite for rainbows!

Expressions of interest are open for 2011/2012 school holidays to be held in Canberra starting from 15 December 2011. Workshop numbers are limited.
